“Stop! Stop, stop stop…. You can’t start it like that.” Wizard #6730 got up from his desk and walked over to the chair bear where Dot sat, speaking aloud into the boombox recording his story. “You can’t start with ‘In the vast expanse of the Runiverse’. It’s not okay.”
Dot looked puzzled… “why not? The Runiverse is vast, and expansive… what’s the issue?”
Uvlius furrowed his brow. “That’s how ALL the robots start their stories! You’ve got to switch it up a bit! And the pirates of the olden days didn’t work exactly like you think they did.. Try again.” Uvlius stopped the cassette player, quickly hit rewind, the hit record again. “Go, go! From the beginning.”
Dot nervously adjusted himself in the chair. “Ahh hemm… Uhh… Okay, well… 'Once upon a time', there was a robot man.. He umm..” Dot jumped up from the chair bear with annoyance. “No no! I can’t do it!” The chair bear rumbled and shifted, awkwardly. “It has to start with ‘In the vast expanse of the Runiverse’. That’s the way I want it to read. It’s a testament to the greatness and breath of the Runiverse!”
Uvlius cut him off, “NO! STOP NO! Are you man? Or robot? Magic? Or machine?”
Dot stamped his foot, “I don’t know? Do you? Maybe I’m both, huh? Ever think of that? Why can’t someone have a little magic in their machine? Why can’t someone start their story off with ‘In the vast expanse of the Runiverse?’ Maybe I just like starting my story off like that? Maybe its part of who I am? It’s a testament to…”
“STOP SAYING THAT” Uvlius flung his red cap at Dot. It bounced off the Robo man’s glistening chest. “I just want people to see your human side! I know you’re special. I know you’re not just another of the Legion.”
Dot moved towards Uvlius and took his hand. “I know that too. You freed me from that. You gave me life, like my brothers and sisters might never know. I’m me now, because of you.” a bead of oil welled up in Dots eye. “But I began life as a robot. It's part of my story. The loracle gave me my beginning and that origin has helped make me what I am today.”
Dot walked over to the window and looked out over the Great Library. From here he could see the mysterious tower of the loracle on the left, and the Gardens down below, where he spent his day’s enjoying the sun, hands in the dirt helping grow life around him. “I can’t change who I am. Or where I came from. And I don’t want to. I am me. I am Magic & Machine.”
Uvlius only smiled. “I wouldn’t have you any other way my son.” He shoot his head in disbelief. They grown up so quick don’t they?
“I’m headed back down to the gardens, I’ll finish my lore later… the goblins need more cabbages in the kitchen. Festival is only a few days away, after all.” With that Dot turned and left the Athenaeum, to get back to work.
